Village of Hope
is a non-profit organization founded by Carol and Jim Herget. Her goal was to provide educational opportunities and basic health care to the community of Ganthier, a rural community east of Port Au Prince. The thirty acre campus consists of eight buildings which house the classrooms, kitchen, dining hall, assembly hall, chapel, library, showers and toilets, vocational school facilities, school nurse’s office, administrative offices and storage facilities on 30 acres of land. The campus has ample space for educational and religious activities for the 640 students, all of whom have access to two meals per day.All have been built by a combination of local funding and labor, along with Village of Hope Lazarus Project funds and work groups. VOH LP also supports fourteen graduates of the school who are attending various universities in Port Au Prince and construction of a Health Center and plans for its operation are well underway!
Missionary Herget had a vision born out of 50 years of service with poor children. All who have watched Village of Hope grow say what she often said, "Without the Lazarus Project's help, such great progress in so short a time could never have happened."
The dream of opening a health clinic at Village of Hope became one step closer with the employment at the beginning of October 2008, with Debbie Berquist as the Clinic Director. Debbie, a Registered Nurse, originally from Hamilton, Ontario has nearly 20 years of International experience, 17 of which have been spent at Hopital Albert Schweitzer (HAS) in the Artibonite Valley of Haiti. Debbie has been married for the last 11 years to Wilner Jules, a Haitian gentleman she met while working at HAS.
Debbie laid the ground work for the health center even as she assumed additional duties directing the Haiti operations by assessing the needs of the community, visiting other health centers, developing relationships with local health department and other governmental agencies. Her experience at HAS is put to use as she develops policies and procedures for the health center. She was a beacon of strength during the earthquake and its aftermath. Sadly, her mother has developed terminal cancer and Debbie has returned to Hamilton to care for her. Debbie's relationship with VOH continues while she is in Canada as she will continue to work on health center and other VOH issues. She also offered to expand the fund raising program for VOH. Bertel (Bert) and Roberta Anderson have joined the Village of Hope Lazarus Project after serving for three years as Directors of the Service International Foundation Centre de Sante (Health Center) in Croix des Bouquets, Haiti. Previous to this tenure, they served on numerous short term mission trips for mobile medical and construction projects. The mission experiences grew from their involvement with Panama United Methodist Church (Panama, New York), their home church for over twenty years.
Bert was employed by SKF Bearings with almost thirty years in management for the ball bearing manufacturing company. Roberta worked in social services for Chautauqua County (NY) as a supervisor of various program areas including Adoption and Foster Care. Early retirement allowed the Anderson’s to head to the mission field full time.
The Andersons have two adult children, Carl living in Sherman, NY and Rachel, in Brooklyn, NY. Both Roberta and Bert bring business and personnel management, as well as administrative skills to the field. Coupled with their calling to serve the Haitian people, their unique skills and previous experience in Haiti we know the Andersons will have a positive impact in assisting VOH achieve its Missions at the VOH School and Health Center. We welcome them to our Lazarus Project “family” and wish them God’s Blessings as they continue their work at Village of Hope.
