University Scholarships for Village of Hope Students
There are presently 14 students from Village Of Hope School attending University in Haiti thanks to sponsorships and support for the University scholarship program.
It was a devastating time for all of them as their schools collapsed or suffered serious damage, following the earthquake. The students are very thankful that their schools have all reopened and that they are able to return to class albeit under somewhat challenging situations as the schools continue to rebuild, replace equipment and find enough professors to teach the classes. As of January 2011, five of the students are in their 4th year; five are in their 3 rd year and 2 are in their second year. The last two students are repeating their first year having lost too much time due to the earthquake, to make up for what they lost. Three are studying medicine, two nursing, four computer science, one education (teaching), one languages and three electrical engineering.
In the past, some of their professors have said, “you must have gone to a good school because you have a good foundation for college”. This certainly says a lot about the education they received at Village Of Hope.
These young men and women started at VOH in pre kindergarten and attended school all of the way through their Rheto and Philo class. Students must pass these two classes after graduation from high school if they wish to go on to University.
The students, so thankful to God that they survived to be able to return to school, are MOST appreciative that their sponsors and the Lazarus Project are willing to continue supporting them and seeing them through their studies despite the delays caused by the events of 2010. They remain committed to their studies and the desire to return to their Ganthier area to use their new skills help those in their own community.
If the country is going to rebuild and realize the dream of a “new Haiti” the education of its youth is more imperative than ever. They are the leaders of tomorrow!!
The Village of Hope Lazarus Project is no longer offering scholarships for post secondary studies but is doing all it can to ensure that the 14 already enrolled will be able to complete their 5 years of study and to fulfill their dreams of graduating with their classmates. Most of the universities in attempts to recuperate their losses, to complete repairs, renovations and replacement of equipment have increased their fees and added costs to the students that the schools would have once covered. The costs of daily living and transport have also gone up.
In order to achieve our goal of seeing the 14 students through to graduation, the Village of Hope Lazarus Project seeks additional sponsors and support to cover the added costs to their programs and their daily cost of living.
A scholarship for each student is $4500 - $7,500 per year. This pays for housing, tuition, books, school supplies and transportation. Partial sponsorships or one time donations toward a scholarship are also possible as these funds can be pooled for an individual scholarship.

What a wonderful way to invest in the future of Haiti! May God continue to bless these students and their sponsors.
