What is the Lazarus Project?
"There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen and dined sumptuously each day. And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus covered with sores, who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man's table."
Luke 16:19-21
The Lazarus Project is the grassroots effort of a growing number of individuals and congregations, mostly Lutheran, to be in ministry in Haiti. In the context of Jesus' parable of the rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31), it is a response to a modern Lazarus in the suffering poor of Haiti, lying on our doorstep begging to be fed with our crumbs.
Since 1995, Village of Hope has been our primary focus. Now several other ministries are being helped. Support is primarily financial, but the opportunity for hands-on assistance is also offered through on-site work groups. Food For The Poor's staff provides assistance with promotional materials, mailing services, and other support services. The Lazarus Project also shares a tithe of all income with Food For The Poor to enable the charity to assist other programs that help the poor.
